Reflection (Wk 1 – 9)

I am really glad that I have the opportunity to attend ES 1102 and it has helped me to brush up my English. In the past, I always think that English class is a boring class but ever since I attended ES 1102, I found that learning English can be so interesting. Over the past 9 weeks, I have learned and understood what are verb tense and verb forms and most importantly, the most essential grammar skills which I have always make lots of mistakes in. In addition, I have also learned how to do APA referencing, reader response and problem-solution essay.

From week 10 to week 12, I would like to learn new vocabulary as this will allow me to have more varieties on the word use. I believe language is a very powerful thing. Different ways of phrasing the sentence will bring across different tone to the readers. Hence, I would like to learn how we can rearrange the words for different types of tone sent to the readers.

My weakness has always been on grammar. However, after revisiting grammar in class as well as the feedbacks and corrections given by teacher and my classmates, I began to be more aware of it as I write my project reports. I guess more practice would help me to improve further.

The comments (word and audio) given by Ms Cook were really helpful to me. However, I preferred the audio as the explanations are clearer and examples were also given to show how I can improve. After the comments given, I would say that I’m about 90% confident in making the changes. I hope that if I have made the wrong changes, Ms Cook will comment again and for me to change again till I get it right. Looking forward to every English class for the remaining 2 weeks!

My Learning Experience (edited)

My learning experience is that in every exam that I take, I should give my best even after knowing that I have secured a place for myself. This is because I don’t know when I may need that exam result that I took.

In the year 2008, I took my ‘O’ level exam lightly knowing that I have already secured a place in Polytechnic through Direct Poly Admission (DPA). One of the criteria was that I had to obtain a L1R4 score of not more than 26 points for my ‘O’ level examination. These criteria seem easy to be achieved. Hence, I did not put in a lot of time and effort as I had when I revised for my preliminary examination. When the results were released, I was shocked to see that I failed my Combined Humanities and I was so worried that I could not get into my desired course in the Polytechnic. After checking with MOE, I realized that on top of the 4 compulsory subjects, another subject that would be taken into account would be either Add Maths or Combined Humanities. I felt a great sigh of relieved after hearing this and I made a promise to myself that I would work hard in Polytechnic so that I do not have to go through this kind of similar torture again when I further my studies in the University.

After I completed my studies in Polytechnic, I obtained a diploma with Merit. However, I felt that this Merit does not serve its purpose because I could not get into my desired course in the local University. I guess it was because my ‘O’ level results that pulled me down. Once again, this experience taught me that I should give my best in every exam that I take and not to be too over-confident of myself.
After waiting for a year, I tried to apply for other courses. As a result, I managed to get into NUS, Project & Facilities Management. Getting into NUS was not an easy journey for me. I will cherish this opportunity that I have to be able to study at NUS and I will give my 110% effort into every module that I take. I hope that I will be able to go for Student Exchange Programme (SEP) and my ultimate goal is to obtain 1st class Honours after I complete my four years study in NUS.
